(We Can Only Be Happy)
Analize Nicolini
Solo show by artist Analize Nicolini at Soma Galeria
From August 16 to September 17
Av. Sete de Setembro, 5708
“Nos Resta Ser Feliz” “We Can Only Be Happy” is the title of the solo show by artist Analize Nicolini (Brazil, 1974) which opens next Saturday at Soma Galeria. The curatorship brings together her most recent production in photography, painting, performance, installation and video, the result of a research carried out from her studies in the Master’s program in Environmental Humanities at Ca’Foscari, in Venice, Italy. In this exhibition, Analize explores verbal language in its visual and sound presentation in speeches that call the viewer to an action, always returning to the fundamental grounds that structure her poetics, linked to interpersonal human relationships and their surroundings. The public is invited to participate in the various artistic proposals, either for its immersive quality, or for being able to take part of some works with them, enabling the message to reach even further.
Removing art from museum spaces and institutions and put it in everyday life is a strategy present in the artist's poetics since her site specific Luzes do Leblon (Lights of Leblon, 2018 - 2019), a project in which she brought photographs to the sand of Praia do Leblon in Rio de Janeiro, that had been taken over a year exactly there. It is again present on her ongoing project Ending in Venice (started in 2019) a happening consisting of the collage of posters on the streets of Venice calling out to the need of mutual respect and harmonious coexistence between people and that city. Ideas and displacements were also proposed in the happening Nas Feridas que Eu Alcanço (In The Wounds I Reach, 2022), in which the artist, wearing a red catsuit, facekini and cape made of recyclable polyamide with holes and wounds, licked her injuries in a public square. With this show, the artist returns to an institutional space at SOMA Galeria to show the traces and results of these proposals made on public spaces around the world - not without proposing that her works can belong to people, like the posters from Ending in Venice that are available for the public to take home to their own use.
In her projects, Analize has always believed in the power of words and uses them as both visual and sound signs, always aiming for them to make themselves clearly understood and for them to affect the behavior of her listeners and readers. In the sound installation Xingamentos (Swearing, 2022), the artist captures everyday sounds and lets the words emerge from her subconscious into orality, demonstrating an indignant, choleric and imperative state. The tempestuousness of her mood is related to work practices and human and non-human suffering in the acceleration of wild neoliberalism in late capitalism. The neons installed in the exhibition remind us of the following: that, here, HERE WE WILL ALL LICK OURSELVES, and that, after all, HERE WE CAN ONLY BE HAPPY, calling attention to practices of caring with ourselves and others and a search for happiness, despite everything. Por uma Nova Ordem Mundial (For a New World Order, 2022), the coin-shaped sculpture made of recycled silver resignifies the object, the logic of value and, as in a game of heads or tails, presents us with a single possibility: more sustainable economic practices that are kind to people and the planet.
